The ‘halo effect’

It isn’t possible to remove the human element from driver assessments! If you develop a particular regard for a pupil with whom you get on well, it’s possible to subconsciously ignore minor errors. You may even gloss over those of a more serious nature. Without realizing it, you may even select an easier route for the pupil by avoiding some of the more difficult situations. Acceptance that this phenomenon, known as the ‘halo effect’, exists is in most cases sufficient to guard against it. Try to remain objective, otherwise your pupils may suffer in the long term.

To a certain extent, the opposite can also occur with an unpopular client. In this case, you may subconsciously treat relatively minor errors as more serious ones, and perhaps fail to notice improvements in performance and give credit where it’s due.
